EcoShip: Sustainability on Lake Starnberg

With the digital monitoring system EcoShip, Shiptec is bringing a fresh breeze of innovation to Lake Starnberg. By intelligently analyzing operational data, significant efficiency and savings potential were identified in the very first year. The project clearly demonstrates how modern technology enables sustainable and economically viable shipping—without compromising comfort or reliability.

Lake Starnberg, framed by the Alpine backdrop, is known for its long tradition of passenger shipping. In the 2025 season, the roughly 20-year-old MS Starnberg took a major step into the digital future. For about a year now, the 800-passenger catamaran has been operating with our innovative EcoShip system. Together with Bayerische Seenschifffahrt, we have digitalized and analyzed the vessel’s operating profile.

Developed by Shiptec in Lucerne, the system automatically records technical data and operating parameters. This provides not only live data and assistance systems but also analyses that are crucial for fleet optimization. The goal of the first year was to identify general efficiency potentials through close collaboration and data evaluation.

At the end of February, the sales and development team—Thomas, Nikolas, and Jan—presented the eagerly awaited results in Bavaria. In a workshop, the client gained deep insights into the actual operational behavior of their vessels throughout the season. The data revealed wide variations across operational profiles, typically an indicator of optimization opportunities. On certain routes, minor adjustments could yield fuel savings of more than 20 percent.

Once again, it becomes clear: those who understand their data can achieve ecological goals without compromising punctuality or passenger comfort. EcoShip creates a new level of transparency that is not only economically attractive but also helps align fleets and operations with modern environmental standards.

Beyond fuel savings, we discovered additional potential during an interactive workshop – from more efficient route planning to improved vessel availability through engine data analysis. The project already proves that modern technology and traditional shipping go hand in hand. This success in Germany marks another milestone for EcoShip, and we look forward to further exciting studies and system developments in 2026!
